The impact of grief can extend far beyond the funeral service. For instance, many families choose to forgo long-standing family traditions because they are too painful. Keeping these traditions alive, however, can be an effective way to honor your loved ones, and it can also help families still reeling from grief begin the healing process. 3 Tips for Maintaining Family Traditions After Losing a Loved One 1. Make Changes to Existing Traditions funeral serviceTweaking an existing family tradition can help carry on the memory of your loved one while also acclimating to your new reality. If a deceased family member was responsible for cooking during celebrations, consider hosting meals at your home and urging the rest of your family to contribute offerings. You can even use your loved one’s original recipes as a way to show respect for their past contributions. 2. Keep Their Memories Alive Sharing fond remembrances of your loved one can also keep their memory alive for future generations. While some people elect to share stories during funeral services, you can participate on subsequent occasions, such as during holiday meals. Make sharing a special memory a new tradition for your family, as doing so can strengthen bonds and offer comfort in your time of need. 3. Create a Tribute to Your Loved One Along with sharing memories, you can also create a physical tribute to your loved one. Consider making a collage, featuring pictures of the deceased, which can serve as a visual reminder of the role this person played in your life. You can also set a place for your lost family member at the dinner table as a means of honoring their presence while your share your meal. For more than nine decades, Fossum Funeral Home in Onalaska, WI, has helped local families arrange loving and respectful funeral services for those cherished people they’ve lost.
